Extraordinary facts about the beautiful freediver Julia Petrik:
In 2006 or before , she burst her eardrum during a freedive at a depth of 50meters ( 160 feet) and still managed to ascend . It’s pretty amazing and admirable one would think
how she maintained composure with the acute pain and the feeling as if one’s in a washing machine from the severe vertigo that followed –all that happening while she’s
in apnea 160 feet down .
As water passes through the drum & into the middle ear , it cannot drain through the Eustachian tube & into the throat since the diver is holding his breath , Water pressure in the middle ear builds , ( and compounded with the cold ) the pain intensifies and vertigo prolonged . If the rupture was pronounced , I’m assuming she must’ve had surgery .
One might be interested to know from Julia what really happened since what I’ve written pertains to what is very likely to happen at that depth and cold , and per the anatomy of the ear .

In July 2002 she did a 35 meter( about 114 ft )freedive in the Barents Sea in minus 6 degree Celsius water , wearing just a wetsuit on bare skin ( no unsulation worn beneath )

A very tight-fitting hood is required for very cold water freedives . This will allow for an air pocket on the ears , making equalization painful and difficult . She again did a freedive to 82 feet in Russia’s White Sea ( somewhere in the Arctic ) in minus 2 degree
Celsius water somewhere in March 2008 .
It’s extraordinary for a freediver who has ruptured her eardrum in the past to freedive in such hard conditions—few would dare , let alone a woman .
